Software Engineer (Berkeley, CA or remote)

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Software Engineer (Mid to Senior Level) to join our team at our primary on-site location in Berkeley, CA. Remote work options are available in the United States, Sweden or Germany. The ideal candidate will have experience developing efficient algorithms for real-time analysis of large image datasets, optimizing performance, and enabling seamless, user-friendly tools for non-technical scientists. They will be passionate about creating intuitive, simple, and powerful user interfaces that allow researchers and scientists without prior technical training to easily interact with complex image data. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, contributing to research breakthroughs in fields such as cell biology, microscopy, and drug discovery.

Responsibilities

    • Design and optimize algorithms for real-time analysis of biological image datasets.
    • Build and maintain scalable image analysis pipelines, capable of handling large datasets of microscopy and other high-content biological data.
    • Develop user-friendly interfaces for non-technical scientists.
    • Test, debug, and maintain software in diverse research settings, ensuring robustness and reliability across different hardware and environments.
    • Collaborate with biologists, image analysts, and bioinformaticians to gather requirements and implement software solutions for automated image processing and analysis.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions that meet scientific goals while maintaining a high standard of software engineering best practices.
    • Participate in code reviews, knowledge sharing, and contribute to a collaborative and innovative development environment.
    • Stay informed on the latest advancements in computer vision, machine learning, and high-content screening technologies to drive continuous improvements in the software.

Qualifications

    • BS/MS or PhD in Software Engineering, Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field with relevant complementary computational or life sciences experience.
    • 2 – 5 years experience
    • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, preferably Python, C++, C#
    • Strong background in algorithms, data structures, and scientific computing
    • Experience with image processing libraries and tools (e.g., OpenCV, ImageJ, scikit-image).
    • Strong understanding of efficient algorithm design, particularly for large-scale or real-time image analysis.
    • Familiarity with UI/UX development, focusing on non-technical user interfaces is highly desirable.
    • Experience handling large datasets and optimizing for performance.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on optimizing for both performance and simplicity.
    • Self-starter and able to work independently
    • Knowledge of version control systems, specifically Git and GitHub is highly desirable.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
